Located in the southwestern corner of Shandong and affiliated to Jining City, hometown of Confucius and Mencius, Jinxiang County lies by the riverside of the picturesque Weishan Lake that abuts Jiangsu, Henan and Anhui to the south and is adjacent to Heze to the west. Covering a total area of 886 square kilometers, Jinxiang County has 9 townships, 4 blocks, 1 province-level development zone and 2 municipal-level development zones. It is the famed hometown of garlic, hometown of onion and national eco-demonstration region.
Jinxiang County has a long history and shows traces of human activities back during the Neolithic Period. It was Min County in Xia Dynasty, Dongmin County during the reign of founder of Qin Dynasty and was affiliated to Shanyang prefecture in Yanzhou in West Han Dynasty. In the first year under the reign of Jianwu in East Han Dynasty (25 A.D.), Jinxiang was founded that fell under the governance of Shanyang Prefecture along with Dongmin and Changyi. In July, 1953, it was incorporated to Jining Prefecture. In February, 1967, it fell to Jining District. In August, 1983, it was under the charge of Jining City. After that, the affiliation relationship is sustained. By the end of 2014, Jinxiang County encompassed Jinxiang Avenue, Gaohe Block, Wangpi Block, Yushan Block, Yangshan Town, Huji Town, Mamiao Town, Jishu town, Sima Town, Xiaoyun Town, Boji Town, Huayu Town and Xinglong Town. It has 9 towns and 4 blocks.
Jinxiang County is located in the southwestern corner of Shandong Province and southern corner of Jining City with south four lakes (Nanyang Lake, Dushan Lake, Zhaoyang Lake and Weishan Lake) to the west. It is located in north latitude 34°52′～35°40′ and east longitude 116°7′～116°30′. It abuts Yutai county to the east and Chengwu county and Juye county to the west, borders on Shanxian County and Jiangsu Fengxian County to the south, and is adjacent to Jiaxiang County and Rencheng District of Jining to the north. It shows a shape of ‘ 耳’ in its overall outline.
105 national road runs through the area from south to north while Zaocao and Dongfeng Road runs through the area from east to the west. Heze-Zaozhuang ring-province high speed and Jinan-Xuzhou high speed traverse through the boundary. It can be directly linked to Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Fuzhou and Rizhao-Dongming Expressway.
Jinxiang Economic Development Zone is 20 kilometers from Jining Airport. 6 air lines are open namely lines to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Chengdu and Qingdao. It is a 2-hour bus drive to Jinan Airport and Xuzhou Airport.
It is 290 kilometers, 410 kilometers, 750 kilometers, 318 kilometers and 510 kilometers respectively from Rizhao Port, Qingdao Port, Shanghai Port, Lianyungang and Tianjin Port. Within the 5-hour economic circle, it links three ports namely Qingdao Port, Rizhao Port and Lianyungang Port.
the county boundary has 24 rivers including 4 rivers converging to South Four Lakes. It has formed 4 river systems namely Dongyu River system, Old Wanfu river system, New Wanfu river system and Beidaliu river system. Its inland waterways can be linked to South Four Lakes to the west and it is directly connected with Beijing-Hangzhou Canal.
Jinxiang County falls to monsoon continental climate in warm temperature zone that is characterized by features in the monsoon climate, distinct four seasons, differentiated cold and hot seasons and dry and west seasons, and undistributed rainfalls all year long.
Located at the western border of South Four Lake in Huaihe River Basin, Jinxiang County has such main streams directly entering the lake as Dongyu River, Old Wanfu River, New Wanfu River and Caihe River that respectively take in convergence of watercourses and form 4 river systems.
Cultivated land in the county is dominated by moisture soil with surface soil textures being sand soil, light soil, middle soil, heavy soil and clay from west to the east. Light soil and middle soil combined covers the largest area that is characterized by loose soil texture and proneness to be cultivated. It is applicable to fibrous root system plantation. After years of fertilization improvement, it shows high soil fertility. Jinxiang County is comparatively scanty in mineral resources and varieties. Fuel minerals in the county are dominated by coals and reserve of coal resource is bountiful. It covers 650 square kilometers of coal-bearing stratum that takes 73.5% of its total area and primarily clusters in northern area, southern downtown Xiaoyun belt and downtown West Garden belt.
