[Red Culture] Jinxiang, a land of red revolution, is a famous old revolutionary base area in southwest Shandong and has glorious revolutionary traditions. Older generation of revolutionists including Liu Shaoqi, Deng Xiaoping and Liu Bocheng once left their footprints of battle or life in here. The triumph of Southwest Shandong Battle ushered in the front gate and channel of strategic counter-offensive and marching towards Yangtze River for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. It has 7 old revolutionary sites including First Rural Party Branch in Southwest Shandong, Work Committee in Southwest Shandong, Memorial to 12 Martyrs, Xinglong Transport Station, Yangshan Revolution Site, Wang Jie Village and Liu Shaoqi in Jinxiang, 4 hometowns for historical figures such as Yang Yichen, Zhou Guanwu, Qin Hezhen and Wang Jie, and 3 large-scaled memorial buildings including Southwest Shandong Battle Memorial Hall, Wang Jie Memorial Hall and Li Muhui Memorial Hall. In 2001, Yangshan Cemetery of Revolutionary Martyrs was incorporated in the 4th batch of national key cemeteries for martyrs. Yangshan Revolution Site is rated as a provincial culture relic protection site and Wang Jie Memorial Hall is among the first batch of provincial key architectural protective organs for cemeteries of martyrs.
[Folk Culture] Jinxiang is located in the hometown of Confucius and Mencius and its folksy customs are within the framework of Confucianism with unique folksy culture taking shape. Jinxiang folk culture features characteristics of Southwest Shandong and reserves traditional folksy events. Other than major traditional festivals such as Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Spring Dragon Festival, Tombs-sweeping Day, Double Sixth Festival, Chinese Valentin’s Day and mid-autumn festival, temple fair is also an important folk custom in Jinxiang County. In the fair, traditional Chinese operas and varieties are shown on the trot, merchants converge, commodities are teeming the market and people are thriving. Folk operas and Chinese folk art forms in Jinxiang County feature distinct folksy features, but Jinxiang is prevalent with ‘different styles and customs in every 10 Li’. Local customers vary though Jinxiang covers 50 kilometers in south-to-north length and over 30 kilometers in east-to-west width. Travelers are dwell in peasant families, perform what peasants do, enjoy tasty rural food and appreciate the manufacturing process of scissor-cut, clay sculpture and root sculpture so that they can further get to know local customs, traditional rite and rustic pleasure in local Jinxiang county when they travel around.
